The Problem: Recent press announcements (see below) have raised concerns at a board of  directors level within Toyota about issues, problems, and challenges relating to their   approaches to quality, quality management, and process control within their manufacturing  plants

Knowledge at Wharton (2010), “Quality on the Line: The Fallout from Toyota’s Recall”,  Viewed on 10th May 2022, Available at:

https://knowledge.wharton.upenn.edu/article/quality-on-the-line-the-fallout-from-toyotas recall/

Your Group has been engaged as consultants to the Board of Directors of Toyota Corporation  to undertake an analysis of the relevant data on Toyota’s quality function, their methods, and  approaches to quality and quality control with a view to making recommendations to the  Board in two areas:- the changes needed to alter their statistical process control(s) within their  manufacturing plants to improve production quality, reduce defects and minimise the need for  product recalls, and the changes that may need to be made to better align with ISO9000   quality control measures.

To complete this assessment, students need to conduct an in-depth review of secondary data and high-quality desk research to identify additional aspects of the problem and relevant  solutions.

• Students are expected to undertake independent research on the problem for their  report by relying on publicly accessible information such as Toyota’s Victorian   website, and other publicly accessible data.

• Students should not contact Toyota for details in any circumstances. • Students are expected to apply relevant knowledge on quality, quality management,  statistical control processes and ISO9000 methods and tools from lectures and the   textbook for this assignment.

Introduction-

• Background to Toyota and to the problem, issues and challenges that need to be  investigated using relevant quality management tools, theories, methods and models  from the subject in the areas of statistical control process, quality management and   ISO9000, with a rationale as to why the approach is needed.

Main Body of the Report-

• The Problem- a detailed and critical review of the problem (i.e., the problems inherent in Toyota’s quality and quality management approaches) based on peer   reviewed academic and non-academic literature. This means identifying the  similarities and differences between what the literature indicates about these (i.e.,   different authors may have alternative opinions or views and or similar views- what  are they?).

• An introduction to the quality management tools, models, methods and approach your group has selected- A detailed and critical analysis of the quality, quality   management, statistical control process control, and ISO9000 methods and tools your  group has selected to analyse the problems, issues, and challenges and how you intend  to use them to present solutions to the problem, with a rationale, based on the theories,  tools, and methods from the subject.

• Analysis and Findings- A detailed and critical analysis of the findings from your  analysis of the problem, using the tools, methods, and or theories your group has  selected. This means developing and building a depth of a critical discussion of your   findings, by applying your chosen tools, methods, and or theories to the information  discovered as part of your research. Present and summarise the findings from your  analysis, both descriptively and visually (i.e., explain to the Board of Directors of   Toyota what you have found based on your analysis).

• Recommendations- present, with justification, three (3) recommendations to the  Board of Directors of Toyota targeted at resolving the problem. These

QUALITY MANAGEMENT ASSESSMENT

Executive summary

The plan of manufacturing gearboxes and engines were set up and the production was started fully in the year 1978. During the initial phase of manufacturing different cars were imported and exported from the port of Melbourne. In this report the discussion is also m,ade on the different risk which was faced by the organization along with all the mitigation techniques which were discussed in the report. This tool offers a competitive advantage to organisations and allows the company to enjoy competitive advantages over other manufacturers of cars. There are different other agreements which also need to be considered by the management like the environmental policies of the country along with FTA which means “Free Trade Agreements”.

1. Introduction

Toyota is one of the major car-manufacturing units from Japan and operates in different parts of the world. One of the subsidiaries of this car manufacturer is in Australia and manufactures different hybrids as well as different cars for making the life of people easier. In Australia Toyota is also responsible for selling different Lexus cars. In the year 1972, Toyota planned to set up a manufacturing unit of different gearbox and engines and a budget of 127 million dollars was sanctioned during that time. The plan of manufacturing gearboxes and engines were set up and the production was started fully in the year 1978. During the initial phase of manufacturing different cars were imported and exported from the port of Melbourne. Toyota entered the Australian market in the year 1958 and became one of the major and leading manufacturers of cars in the year 1991.

Different approaches which the management of the leading car companies for sustaining in the market were “manufacturing vehicles domestically”, “exporting most of the products manufactured in the domestic market”, and “importing different required items at a cheaper rate from different sources” used. These three were the major approaches, which were implemented by the management of Toyota Australia to become the leading car manufacturer in the country.

There are certain problems, which were also faced by the organisation while conducting business in the country. One of the main problems, which were faced by the organisation, was a fragmented and competitive market. The competition was increased during the initial phase as different car manufacturers like Ford have easy access to import different cars thus increasing the competition. There are certain other problems also faced by Toyota like the regular changes in the demand and supply of cars and products, operating on a low scale, different additional costs, different corporate policies and many others. These were the problems, which were faced by the organisation while conducting business in the country. All the approaches, which are discussed, were implemented in the business for mitigating all these issues.

There were certain management tools and techniques which were used by the management to implement “management science for qualitative tools”, different models and many others. Some of the techniques, which were incorporated by the management, were “linear programming” and “break even analysis”. Toyota Australia also follows different business models for conducting the business. One of the main business models, which are being followed by the organisation, is the “Manufacturing model”. Following this model Toyota makes use of the entire raw material for generating different cars and supplies all these to different retailers and distributors. Toyota also has used the model “Leasing model” in the business for using different machines from different sources to make the manufacturing process easy and produce more products in the market. These are all the things which were being incorporated by the management of Toyota while dealing with different issues and conducting business in an efficient manner.

2.  Description of the problem

There were different problems, which were faced by Toyota while running the business in Australia (Blair, 2021). One of the main problems, which were faced by the organisation in the field, was fragmented market and high competition in the sector. The reason behind high competition in the market was due to low tariffs in the Australian market. There were different other systems of easy access which allow different manufacturers to extract different data and conduct the entire business (Dean, M., & Broomhill, 2018). These are all the reasons due to which the automotive market in the country has become fragmented and the competition has increased. Along with increase in the competition, Toyota has also faced huge loss in demand of vehicles. The demand of different vehicles changes with time and thus the issue of sustaining in the market also reduce.

During the time of economic crisis the demand for different vehicles has also reduced and the price of different raw materials which are required for the manufacturing of the cars were reasonably high (Gamper et al. 2022). It predicted by different business officials and recorded that the sales of Toyota Australia have reduced by 13% in 2013. During that time, the geographic conduction of the manufacturing unit has also caused a lot of trouble in the sales and the entire market was shattered. After the drastic fall in the demand of the cars, companies have also invested in the research and development of fuel-efficient cars in the country.

The automotive market in Australia is very small and the demand for cars keeps on changing. Due to this reason, Toyota used to manufacture fewer cars and distribute them to different retailers and dealers (Ho et al. 2022). During the time, of high demand due to less availability in the cars it affected the sales and overall performance of the organisation to remain competitive in the market. Along with all these, there are certain factors, which have also raised the number of issues, which were faced by the organisation. The charge of labourers in Australia is high and they are required to be paid on a weekly basis (Ivanov et al. 2019). These criteria have increased many problems for the organisation.

Different taxes have also raised different issues in the market. Certain taxes, which are required to be paid by the car manufactures in the country, are carbon taxes, different tax related to vehicles like luxury taxes and many others (James, 2021). All these have allowed the organisation to increase the rates of the vehicles thus lowering the level of competition in the market of Australia. There are different other agreements which also need to be considered by the management like the environmental policies of the country along with FTA which means “Free Trade Agreements”. All these are some of the agreements, which are required to be understood and taken into consideration and increase the risk of manufacturing different vehicles in the country (Kshetri, & Loukoianova, 2019). Different approaches were followed by the organisation for mitigating all the risk and issues and performing well in the business.

3. Quality management tools, models, methods and approach

There are different management tools, which are used by the organisation for the betterment of the business. Linear programming and “Break even analysis” are two tools, which were implemented by the management in the business for better manufacturing of vehicles in the organisation (Manovytska, Semenova, & Dolenko, 2021). Linear programming of all the resources was being used by the organization for implementing different strategies and using all the available resources in an efficient manner. Allocating all the resources is one of the important aspects, which are required for meeting all the operational expenses. All these factors using these ensure good profit generation and allow the organisation to work with a good margin in profit (Moiseev, 2019). This tool also allows the management to implement different policies in the business for better future scope of the business.

Another tool, which was implemented in the business to minimize the one of the issues, is analytical tools, which were faced by the organisation regarding the change in the demand and supply of cars. By using this tool the number, units, which are required to be manufactured, can be determined in an efficient manner and the production line can be made more efficient (Samson, & Swink, 2022). It also allows the organisation to predict different future scope and prospects of the business and overcome different challenges. Using this good inventory can be assured by the organisation so the entire demand off the market can be met easily. This tool offers a competitive advantage to organisations and allows the company to enjoy competitive advantages over other manufacturers of cars. These are some of the tools, which are being used by the organisation while performing the business in an efficient manner and for enjoying competitive advantage over others.

A business can be conducted in an efficient manner by following different business models. There are plenty of business models, which can be used for the betterment of the business and gain competitive advantage. The business models, which are being used by the organisation, are manufacturing models and leasing models. Following these two models, different tasks, which are related to the business, can be controlled in an efficient manner. Following the manufacturing model in the business it allows the management to get access to different raw materials which are required to build a car like aluminium, steel, fibres and many others can be collected in an efficient manner (Stanton, Bartram, & Bamber, 2022). Manufacturing models offer various strategies, which all can use these items well and in an effective way for reducing the expenses related to manufacturing. It also allows them to deal with different distributors and retailers in an efficient manner so that all the cars can be sold in a better way. Usage of all these models in the business shows the growth of the company in the sector from the increase in the revenue of the business. It can be seen that the organisation was generating good revenue from the business with 171.5 billion in the year 2019.

Another business model, which is incorporated by the organisation, is the Leasing model. There are different machines, which are being used, in an automotive industry for the manufacturing of a particular car. Different machines can be taken in lease and all the production can be carried out in an efficient manner (Tsubota Nakanishi, 2019). After using all these models and tools in the production department as well as in the development department has allowed the organisation to boost their sales by significant values. It can be seen from the above figure the operating income of the organisation has increased from 1000000 million yen to over 25000000 yen within a span of some years. This all shows the efficient application and implementation of different tools and models in the business.

There are different approaches, which are being followed by the organisation for meeting all the targets and for mitigating all the issues faced by the organisation. Different approaches and techniques which were incorporated by the organisation are “manufacturing vehicles domestically”, “exporting most of the products manufactured in the domestic market”, and “importing different required items at a cheaper rate from different sources” (Wormald, 2020). All these approaches have allowed the organisation to deal with different challenges and perform various tasks in an efficient manner. Using this good inventory can be assured by the organisation so the entire demand off the market can be met easily. This tool offers a competitive advantage to organisations and allows the company to enjoy competitive advantages over other manufacturers of cars. There are different other agreements which also need to be considered by the management like the environmental policies of the country along with FTA which means “Free Trade Agreements”. All these are some of the agreements, which are required to understood and taken into consideration and increase the risk of manufacturing different vehicles in the country. Along with FTAs, or "Free Trade Agreements," the management must also take into account many other agreements, such as the nation's environmental rules. These are only a few of the agreements that must be comprehended, taken into account, and increased risk of producing various cars in the nation (Yushina et al. 2021). All these approaches have helped the organisation to deal with different challenges and conduct business in an efficient manner. Different raw materials were gathered in an efficient manner and at a cheaper rate for conducting the business in an efficient manner. The approach of exporting different products after manufacturing all the products in the domestic market has also allowed the organisation to generate good profit from the business.
